The El Minzah and the Café Baba offer a peephole into what Tangier was like five decades ago, and what enticed the Stones. Morocco was to them what India was to the Beatles: a place of spirituality, of powerful drugs and, particularly upon the seedy streets of Tangier, hustlers, spies, eccentric aristocrats and writers-in-exile such as Paul Bowles and William S Burroughs. Its literary inspirations were of transcendental appeal to the 23-year-old Keith Richards. While Tangier was Morocco’s most charming destination destination from the late 1940s through to the Swinging Sixties, these days other towns are re-energised and promise the kind of exotic hideaways that continue to draw the world’s biggest rock bands inland. So, we set course for Chefchaouen, the Blue Pearl.The Stones didn’t visit Chefchaouen – their loss – but a big part of what brought them to Morocco in the first place is grown at the base of the Rif Mountains that surround us: cannabis, known here as Kif. Tangier 2017: Ακολουθώντας τα βήματα των Rolling Stones 50 χρόνια μετά.
Το ξενοδοχείο El Minzah και το Café Baba λειτούργησαν σαν η χαραμάδα απ’οπου μπόρεσα να δω τι ήταν η Ταγγέρη πριν από πέντε δεκαετίες και τι έζησαν οι Stones . Το Μαρόκο ήταν γι ‘αυτούς ότι ήταν η Ινδία για τους Beatles: ένας τόπος πνευματικότητας, σκληρά ναρκωτικά αλλά κυρίως οι πολυσύχναστοι δρόμοι της Ταγγέρης, με τα λαμόγια της εποχής ,τους κατασκόπους, τους εκκεντρικούς αριστοκράτες και τους εξόριστους συγγραφείς, όπως ο Paul Bowles και ο William S Burroughs. Μια πόλη έμπνευσης για τους λογοτέχνες και υπερβατικά ελκυστική για τον τότε 23χρονο Keith Richards. Ενώ η Ταγγέρη ήταν ο πιο γοητευτικός προορισμός του Μαρόκου από τα τέλη της δεκαετίας του 1940 έως την περίοδο των Swinging Sixties, σήμερα και άλλες πόλεις έχουν ενεργοποιηθεί προς αυτή την κατεύθυνση και γίνονται ολοένα ένα είδος εξωτικών καταφυγίων απ’οπου συνεχίζουν να αντλούν έμπνευση οι μεγαλύτερες ροκ μπάντες του κόσμου. Έτσι, συνεχίσαμε την πορεία μας προς την Chefchaouen, την Μπλε Πέρλα του Μαρόκου . Οι Stones δεν επισκέφτηκαν ποτέ την Chefchaouen ,κάπου χάθηκαν στην διαδρομή , αλλά ένα μεγάλο μέρος της αιτίας που τους έφερε στο Μαρόκο κατά πρώτο λόγο καλλιεργείτο στους πρόποδες των ορέων Rif που την περικλείουν : η κάνναβη, γνωστή εδώ και ως Kif.
